On May 24, 2024, the 49th anniversary of ECOWAS was commemorated with a central event titled "Getting to Know ECOWAS" at the Secondary School Manuel Lopes on Santiago Island, Cabo Verde. Organized by the Office of the Resident Representative of the President of ECOWAS in Cabo Verde, this initiative aimed to educate and inspire students from various municipalities across the island.

This year's celebration revolved around the theme “Enhancing Regional Unity, Peace and Security.” The event included presentations designed to deepen students' understanding of ECOWAS’s role in regional integration. Students were exposed to insights into the Commission’s efforts in promoting economic cooperation and social cohesion among West African states.

Interactive sessions throughout the morning covered themes such as cultural diversity, geographical richness, and socio-economic development within ECOWAS member states. These presentations highlighted regional integration's importance and its benefits for West Africa's collective development. The agenda also featured an awareness session on the newly inaugurated ECOWAS Multinational Maritime Coordination Center in Zone G, headquartered in Praia.

A significant part of the celebration focused on exploring cultural and geographical aspects of member states. Through multimedia presentations and discussions, students learned about the region's diverse cultural heritage, shared values, and common goals. Cultural activities included talent demonstrations featuring singing and dancing.

The event incorporated quizzes and discussions to encourage active student participation. This interactive approach aimed to make learning more enjoyable while ensuring that students could relate information to their daily lives and future aspirations.

Dr. Samuel Lamptey, Resident Representative of the President of ECOWAS in Cabo Verde, emphasized involving youth in such commemorations during his address. He noted that "the future of ECOWAS lies in the hands of the younger generation," highlighting its importance for them to understand the organization's mission and achievements.
