DataWind, Intel Nigeria to market low-cost smartphones, tablets

Internet provider DataWind Inc., based in Canada, recently partnered with Intel Nigeria to market inexpensive tablet computers and smartphones in Nigeria.

"The relationship with Intel reinforces the strength and effectiveness of our products," Raja Tuli, DataWind's chairman and chief technology officer, said. "We plan to drive an integrated launch in Nigeria with our partners Intel and Airtel over the coming months.

"Our strategy has always been hinged on affordability and connectivity," Tuli said. "We strongly believe this will help bridge the digital divide in emerging markets like Nigeria."

The devices will run on Android operating systems and will be powered by Intel's 3G-enabled Atom processor.

"It is critical for us as a company to keep innovating and collaborating with partners from around the world to achieve Intel's global objective: Empowering people around the world through technology," Ekundare Olubunmi, Intel Nigeria's country manager, said. "DataWind is one of the many partnerships we are fostering to ensure that more Nigerians have access to technology and the web."
