The African Union (AU) Commission recently held the final meeting of the Steering Committee for the AU project “Building African Union Capacities for Security Sector
Reform (SSR): A Joint United Nations/European Union Support Action."
The SSR project is a joint project between the AU, the United Nations (U.N.) and the European Union (EU) that was initiated in 2013 and is set to conclude at the end of this year. During the meeting, the committee discussed the project's work during its three-year lifespan. It also allowed partners to reiterate their commitment to the project. The partners said they would work together on SSR in other forms.
The Steering Committee consisted of representatives from the AU Commission, the U.N. Office for Project Services, the Netherlands, the European Union, Norway, the African Security Sector Network and the U.N. Department of Peacekeeping Operations.
AU said SSR will be integrated as part of AU activities to serve and facilitate the needs of the African Peace and Security Architecture.
Tarek Sharif, head of the Defense and Security Division (DSD) of the AU Peace and Security Department, thanked all partner organizations and agencies for supporting the project and AU.
