President Suluhu lauds partnership with African Development Bank Group at anniversary to mark 60 years of Tanzania, Zanzibar union

Tanzanian President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan expressed her appreciation for the partnership with the African Development Bank Group during the celebration marking 60 years of the Union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. President Suluhu specifically addressed Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, the president of the African Development Bank Group, acknowledging the Bank's significant role in Tanzania's infrastructure development by stating, "I have invited the Bank president for a special purpose."

At the event held at Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam city, attended by various high-level guests, including regional leaders, President Suluhu praised the unity between Tanganyika and Zanzibar. She emphasized how this unity had contributed to Tanzania's transition from a low-income to lower-middle-income status, expressing optimism for further progress: "We are hopeful that with such unity, we will move to the even higher levels. Let us continue to work hard at it for this to happen."

The African Development Bank Group has been actively involved in funding transformative projects in Tanzania, with a total portfolio value of $3.64 billion. The Bank's support has been primarily focused on infrastructure development, particularly in transport, energy, water, and sanitation sectors. Notable projects include the Road Sector Support Project, which has significantly improved travel times and access to markets for local farmers, as well as the joint Tanzania-Burundi-DR Congo Standard Gauge Railway Project aimed at enhancing regional trading and economic development.

Dr. Adesina, alongside other Bank officials, attended the anniversary celebrations, highlighting the commitment of the African Development Bank Group to supporting Tanzania's development goals. The Bank's ongoing efforts in Tanzania underscore its dedication to promoting sustainable infrastructure and economic growth in the region.
