This week, Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, held meetings in Abuja with international energy and finance partners to support Mission 300. The initiative aims to expand electricity access across Africa and boost economic growth.

The talks centered on speeding up investment and improving Nigeria’s power sector. Reliable electricity was identified as a key factor for increasing productivity, supporting industrial growth, enabling digital services, and creating jobs.

Edun stated that Mission 300 is a main part of Nigeria’s economic plan. He pointed out the country’s early adoption of the Compact agreement, the creation of a joint Finance and Power delivery unit, and progress in distributed renewable energy projects backed by new financing models and private sector involvement.

Anna Bjerde, Managing Director of Operations at the World Bank Group, praised Nigeria’s reforms. She said: “Nigeria is a potential game changer for Mission 300 due to its scale and leadership,” adding that current programs are already helping more people gain access to electricity.

Adebayo Adelabu, Minister of Power, highlighted that efforts in the power sector match President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic goals. He mentioned improvements in metering systems, transmission upgrades, and regional power integration.

All participants agreed on the need to speed up implementation, attract large-scale investment, and ensure Mission 300 leads to real economic benefits for Nigerians.
