The ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) participated in a workshop on climate change, migration, and sustainable development at the University Jean Piaget of Cabo Verde. The event took place on June 17, 2025, organized by UniPiaget’s Inter-University Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies on Migration, Gender and Sustainable Development. It was part of the activities marking the 50th anniversary of ECOWAS and supported by the AfriquEuropa project.
The workshop aimed to explore the connections between migration, climate change, and sustainable development through knowledge-sharing and policy dialogue. Experts from national and international backgrounds attended the event, which was held in a hybrid format. Two thematic panels were featured focusing on challenges, best practices, and local development strategies.
Prof. Joanita Rodrigues, Dean of UniPiaget, opened the event with remarks on addressing climate change and migration as “multidisciplinary, comprehensive, and humanized” issues requiring visionary collaboration across sectors.
Ms. Monica Maduekwe represented ECREEE with a presentation about their work in climate change mitigation and adaptation. She emphasized ECREEE’s commitment to helping ECOWAS Member States build resilient energy systems that are low-carbon while promoting social inclusion and sustainable economic growth.
The workshop allowed ECREEE to share best practices while reinforcing its support for initiatives contributing to climate resilience and sustainable energy access across West Africa.
