St Helena will participate in the global observance of Diabetes Week from June 9 to 16, 2025. This initiative aims to raise awareness and foster discussions about the realities of living with diabetes. On the island, approximately one in four people are on medication for diabetes, and around 400 individuals live with prediabetes.
Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic disorder characterized by the body’s inability to produce enough insulin or use it effectively. Insulin is essential for regulating blood sugar levels, and its improper management can lead to severe health complications such as damage to blood vessels, blindness, amputation, kidney disease, heart attack, and stroke.
The focus of this year’s Diabetes Week on St Helena is on the importance of regular health checks for those living with diabetes. Although managing these routine assessments can feel burdensome at times, they are crucial for maintaining health and preventing serious complications. “For those living with diabetes,” reads a statement from organizers, “it can often feel like a constant battle, but these regular health checks are your strongest defence.”
Residents are encouraged by the health team to engage in lifestyle changes that could lower their risk of developing diabetes. Recommended measures include maintaining a healthy weight through proper diet and exercise and avoiding smoking.
To commemorate Diabetes Week, the Health Promotion Team will set up a stall at The Market in Jamestown on Thursday, June 12, 2025. Starting at 10:00 AM, attendees will have access to diabetes risk score checks and blood pressure screenings. They will also have opportunities to discuss diabetes-related topics with healthcare professionals and learn about making positive lifestyle changes from the Better Health and Smokefree team.
“This is a valuable opportunity for community members,” say event organizers, emphasizing the chance for individuals to understand their risk factors better and gain support for healthier living.
