Sierra Leone’s president visits Magiagi Village during Commonwealth summit

Magiagi, Samoa – President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone visited Magiagi Village in Samoa during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). The village adopted the name of Sierra Leone as part of a CHOGM initiative where Samoan villages took on names of Commonwealth countries.

Mayor Fetulima Malopito Kapelani welcomed President Bio and his delegation, expressing pride in hosting him and gratitude for his leadership in women’s empowerment. She noted the historical connection between Magiagi and Sierra Leone, highlighting that early settlers included Sierra Leoneans.

The Mayor described Magiagi as a peaceful community near the National University of Samoa and Gorillas Hill, emphasizing unity among its residents. President Bio expressed appreciation for the warm reception and the gesture of adopting Sierra Leone’s name. He acknowledged historical ties and committed to fostering deeper relations.

“This visit is a testament to the bonds that unite us, despite the distance. I thank you for adopting the name of our country and for keeping the spirit of Sierra Leone alive here in Samoa. We will continue to stay connected and strengthen our shared vision of peace and development,” said President Bio.

President Bio also participated as a panelist at the 27th Commonwealth Business Forum 2024 in Apia, Samoa.
