Sierra Leone’s president receives honorary chief title in Samoa

Magiagi Village, Samoa, October 26, 2024 – President Dr. Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone has been honored with the title of “Tuioataga,” meaning King, in a ceremony held in Magiagi village, Samoa. The event was organized by the Chief’s Council to recognize President Bio as an exceptional leader. Faatasi Puleiata, the Chief Orator, described it as an exclusive tradition for esteemed visitors.

During the ceremony, village chiefs handed their title sticks to a young boy who arranged them on a mat. A young woman then prepared a traditional kava beverage for President Bio as part of the ritual.

The occasion was led by Samoan Chief Papalii Charles Lima and Chief Luafau Aimaasu formally declared President Bio as “Tuioataga” or King of Magiagi village. He emphasized that the ceremony highlighted values of respect for tradition and unity.

Chief Nonu Williams prayed for President Bio’s protection and blessings during the event. He noted that this honor is deeply connected to cultural values shared by Sierra Leone and Samoa.

President Bio expressed gratitude to the chiefs and people of Magiagi village for their hospitality and recognition. He shared his connection to chieftaincy and vowed to carry this message back to Sierra Leone.

The ceremony’s highlight was when President Bio participated in a traditional kava-drinking ritual with local chiefs. Following this gesture, he received gifts from the women of the village.
