Moyamba Town, Southern Region – On May 17, 2025, President Dr. Julius Maada Bio inaugurated a 1-Megawatt Solar Plant in Moyamba Township. This development restores continuous electricity to the town for the first time in four decades and will benefit over 3,000 households.
President Bio highlighted the project’s significance in Sierra Leone’s push towards sustainable energy. He stated that affordable and sustainable energy is crucial for the country’s economic growth and human capital development.
“This project is yet another shining example of effective collaboration between my government and our development partners,” President Bio said. “While my administration funded the construction of the distribution network, our partners financed the installation of the solar PV generation plant and battery storage.”
He thanked contributors such as the World Bank and UNOPS for their roles in realizing this project. Other supporting organizations included the African Development Bank and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The Moyamba Solar Plant serves as a pilot initiative with plans to replicate it across other district headquarters to provide reliable electricity access. “Access to energy is a human right and a critical enabler of human development, especially in the 21st century,” President Bio noted.
President Bio discussed how electricity could transform communities by fostering business growth, entrepreneurship, education, healthcare services, and improving life quality overall. He stressed that previously unreliable power sources had impeded service delivery and business growth.
UNOPS West Africa Director Silvia Gallo praised President Bio’s dedication to ensuring reliable electricity access throughout Sierra Leone. “The commissioning of the Moyamba Solar Plant is a clear testament that change is happening,” she said.
Kagaba Paul Mukibi from the World Bank emphasized their commitment to support off-grid solar systems nationwide. Meanwhile, Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella applauded President Bio’s comprehensive approach to overcoming energy sector challenges.
