Sierra Leone’s president appoints new secretary amid praises for outgoing official

His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio presided over the oath-taking ceremony of the new Secretary to the President, Dr. Emmanuel Gaima, at the Presidential Lodge in Hill Station, Freetown, on Friday, July 19, 2024. The President expressed hope and confidence that Dr. Gaima would bring his extensive expertise on governance to bear on his new role.

President Bio also bade farewell to the outgoing Secretary to the President, Dr. Julius Sandy, thanking him for his years of invaluable service and support to the presidency. He wished Dr. Sandy well in his new assignment as Sierra Leone’s High Commissioner to Nigeria.

Acknowledging the significance of the office of the Secretary to the President, President Bio emphasized that while ultimate responsibility lies with him as head of state, working closely with the President is a substantial undertaking requiring considerable dedication.

The President encouraged Dr. Gaima to learn from his predecessor and expressed eagerness for seamless collaboration between them. He assured Dr. Gaima of presidential support and a conducive working environment during his tenure.

President Bio congratulated Dr. Sandy for being a pillar of support even before he assumed office and stated: “Don’t hesitate to call me. We would have missed you dearly… I wish you well… Thanks for everything.”

In response, Dr. Emmanuel Gaima thanked President Bio for making significant contributions to his career over five years and expressed gratitude on behalf of his family and associates. Acknowledging challenges in his new role, he assured commitment based on his experience at State House and faith in God.

Dr. Gaima reaffirmed his dedication to continuity and delivery-focused governance, aiming to bridge gaps between administration and execution.
