The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) of Sierra Leone has submitted its 2023 Annual Report to President Julius Maada Bio. This action fulfills the requirement under Section 19(1) of the Anti-Corruption Act 2008, which mandates the ACC to provide an annual report of its activities to the President.
Francis Ben Kaifala, Commissioner of the ACC, led the presentation at State House in Freetown. The report includes findings and activities from various units such as assets declaration, intelligence operations, investigations, prosecutions, prevention strategies, and procurement.
Deputy Commissioner Augustine Foday Ngobie emphasized that the report demonstrates the Commission’s commitment to combating corruption. He noted a significant milestone achieved in 2023 was moving into their new headquarters, The Integrity House. This facility was funded by President Bio’s administration.
Ngobie highlighted work done by regional offices in Bo, Port Loko, Kenema, Makeni, and Kono involving public sensitization and enforcement activities. He acknowledged that while corruption is not eradicated, progress is being made.
President Julius Maada Bio praised the ACC for its dedication to fighting corruption. Reflecting on past challenges when Sierra Leone was deemed highly corrupt globally, he reaffirmed his campaign promise to restore national credibility.
“Today even our most critical detractors recognize the significant progress we have made in the fight against corruption,” stated President Bio. He thanked international partners like the World Bank and UNICEF for their support.
President Bio emphasized that presenting this report annually shows his administration’s firm stance against corruption and helps create a secure environment for business investment in Sierra Leone.
“My government remains vigilant and committed to the fight against corruption,” said President Bio. “This is a battle that is vital to our nation’s future.” He urged all citizens to join this effort for victory over corruption.
The President reiterated his commitment to maintaining anti-corruption measures and ensuring transparent governance in Sierra Leone.
