State House, Freetown – President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone has received a comprehensive report from the Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion (ICPNC). The document outlines the Commission’s work over the past three years in building partnerships with local and international entities to enhance its autonomy and effectiveness.
Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh emphasized the importance of this presentation, noting that it fulfills a constitutional requirement under the ICPNC Act. He praised the Commission for its commitment to promoting peace and unity since its inception.
Reverend Shodanke Johnson, Chairman of the ICPNC Board of Directors, expressed gratitude for serving under President Bio’s leadership. He highlighted key achievements such as advancing strategic plans, fostering partnerships, and initiating efforts to mitigate conflict. Reverend Johnson commended President Bio for his foresight in establishing the Commission as a proactive measure for ensuring peace.
Madam Hawa Sally Samai, Executive Secretary of the ICPNC, thanked President Bio and stakeholders for their support. She stressed the importance of presenting the report to Parliament as per Section 23 of the ICPNC Act. “We are dedicated to adopting a multi-stakeholder approach to ensure the effective implementation of our strategies,” she stated.
President Bio praised the Commission’s work over three years, describing its establishment as deliberate and visionary. He acknowledged initial challenges but commended achievements in fostering peace. “The preventive nature of your work is invaluable,” he remarked, highlighting how early conflict intervention contributes significantly to national stability.
He assured continued government support, emphasizing that peace is essential for development. “Without peace, we cannot achieve tangible developmental progress,” he said, urging continued dedication despite scarce gratitude.
President Bio expressed optimism about reviewing the report and looks forward to constructive input from Parliament to strengthen recommendations.
