Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio addressed the 14th National Delegates Conference of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) at the Freetown International Conference Centre, calling on delegates and supporters to prioritize unity, discipline, and democratic integrity as the party prepares to elect its new national executive.
The two-day conference began with interfaith prayers and adoption of its agenda. It is seen as a key step in shaping the SLPP’s strategy ahead of the 2028 General Elections.
In his remarks, President Bio told attendees, “We have convened here to elect the remaining National Executive Members of our great party, a responsibility that demands our integrity, unity, and vision.” He expressed appreciation for outgoing executive members led by Dr. Prince Alex Harding and highlighted their role in securing victories in both the 2018 and 2023 general elections. “Now it is our collective duty to build upon that legacy,” he said.
President Bio urged delegates to ensure their actions set an example for political conduct nationwide. “Politics is not war. Debate is not destruction. Disagreement is not betrayal,” he stated. “Let this be a contest of character, not chaos; of vision, not vitriol.”
He referenced SLPP’s history since its founding in 1951 and acknowledged leaders such as Sir Milton Margai and Madam Ella Koblo Gulama for their contributions to economic justice and accountable governance. “We are not gathered here as factions, but as one family, united in purpose,” he added. “Let us lead not only in government but also in character and conduct.”
Dr. Prince Alex Harding delivered his farewell address as outgoing National Chairman, urging continued unity within the party: “I may be stepping down as chairman, but I will remain active and committed to the SLPP.” He also praised President Bio’s efforts toward peace within the organization.
Ambassador Osman Foday Yansaneh, Acting Chairman of opposition All People’s Congress (APC), attended the event and offered support for internal democracy within SLPP: “The quality of leadership you elect today strengthens not just your party but our national democracy.”
Ibrahim Sorie Sesay from the All Political Parties Association commended President Bio for promoting peace and gender empowerment while encouraging sustained leadership.
Outgoing Secretary-General Umaru Napoleon Koroma reviewed recent achievements under his tenure including electoral victories, growth in parliamentary representation, acquisition of party properties nationwide, and strengthened international relationships. “We have laid the foundation for continued success,” Koroma said.
The conference aims to guide SLPP’s direction over coming years with a renewed leadership team preparing for future elections.
