Sierra Leone leaders unite in support of President Bio’s ECOWAS chairmanship

The parliamentary leadership of Sierra Leone’s ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) and the opposition All People’s Congress (APC) jointly visited President Julius Maada Bio at State House to congratulate him on his recent election as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government. Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh introduced the visitors, explaining that they were there to appreciate the President’s efforts in enhancing Sierra Leone’s international standing through his new role.

Hon. Matthew Sahr Nyuma, Majority Leader in Parliament, expressed gratitude to President Bio for the audience, highlighting internal consultations between SLPP and APC that led to their unanimous decision to congratulate him formally. He emphasized the collaborative relationship between the Executive and Legislature and called for more regular engagements with the President.

Representing the opposition APC, Hon. Abdul Kargbo congratulated President Bio for international recognition and praised his trust in young leaders. “We are proud as a nation of your achievement,” he stated, adding that government bills in national interest have been passed quickly due to teamwork and shared patriotism.

President Bio thanked both parties’ parliamentary leadership for their gesture, calling it a sign of patriotism and unity. “Your coming together… shows maturity and a common commitment to Sierra Leone,” he said. He noted that his successes are national victories reflecting collective work.

The President acknowledged the opposition’s oversight role, which aids governance through constructive criticism. He encouraged Members of Parliament to use their collective strength for national development, suggesting a shift towards cooperation and dialogue focused on development goals.

President Bio proposed a national dialogue to set long-term development priorities beneficial for future administrations. He concluded by thanking Parliament for their visit and congratulatory message.
