Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio has launched the country’s Energy Transition and Green Growth Plan. The announcement took place during the second National Climate Resilience and Energy Transition Dialogue in Freetown, organized by the Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, Renewable Energy, and Food Security (PI-CREF).
President Bio outlined that the plan involves a comprehensive analysis of key sectors such as energy, agriculture, transport, and mining. This analysis will explore various scenarios to identify cost-effective solutions for meeting Sierra Leone’s future energy needs.
The president expressed gratitude for the collaboration with PI-CREF, the Sustainable Energy for All (SEFA) program, and other partners in developing Sierra Leone’s first-ever Energy Transition and Investment Plan (ETIP). He stated that this plan demonstrates his government’s dedication to an inclusive, affordable, and sustainable energy transition.
Acknowledging international support during the dialogue, President Bio remarked: “Sierra Leone is endowed with multiple renewable energy sources, but transitioning these sources into usable energy for domestic and commercial purposes is daunting and costly. I, however, remain hopeful because I know I have friends like you.”
Deputy Minister 1 of the Ministry of Energy Eldred Taylor noted that diverse global energy partners were present at the dialogue to work towards a sustainable energy future for Sierra Leone.
Fredrick Appiah from UNDP represented partner organizations at the event. He praised the progress made since last year’s initiative launch and pledged ongoing support for Sierra Leone’s journey toward green industrialization. Mr. Appiah encouraged other organizations to contribute to advancing the country’s energy sector.
