State House, Freetown, November 5, 2024 – President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone has officially launched the National Poppy Week at State House. The event highlighted the government’s dedication to supporting military personnel and honoring their service. President Bio addressed both current and former service members, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to providing financial support and necessary resources for the military.
In his speech, President Bio encouraged citizens to reflect on the sacrifices made by servicemen and women during the upcoming Remembrance Day on November 10, 2024. “This year’s Remembrance Day serves as a profound tribute to the men and women who have stood on the frontlines, defending our way of life and safeguarding the future of all Sierra Leoneans,” he stated.
The President paid homage to those who served in both World Wars, acknowledging their contributions not only to Sierra Leone but also to global peace. He also remembered those who lost their lives in recent national challenges, including 18 security personnel who died on November 26, 2023.
President Bio stressed the importance of recognizing the role of security forces in maintaining peace and unity. “We owe our veterans. those who have served and those who continue to serve, a debt that can never be fully repaid,” he said. He praised their selfless service for a brighter future for Sierra Leone.
Families of fallen servicemen were also honored during the ceremony. President Bio reiterated Sierra Leone’s commitment to peace and promised continued support for military personnel through proper compensation and respect for veterans’ contributions.
He expressed gratitude towards the British government and Royal Commonwealth Ex-Services for supporting veterans from World War II and earlier periods.
Retired Lieutenant Colonel Abubakar Kamara, acting chairman of the Sierra Leone Ex-Servicemen Association, thanked President Bio and others involved in organizing Poppy Day celebrations. He highlighted the importance of commemorating wartime contributions as well as peacekeeping efforts across Africa. Kamara acknowledged British support for families of fallen soldiers and pledged loyalty to President Bio’s government.
