State House, Freetown – On December 20, 2024, President Dr. Julius Maada Bio led the swearing-in ceremony for the newly appointed Chief Justice, Mr. Komba Kamanda Esq., at State House. During the event, President Bio highlighted the judiciary’s essential role as a key pillar of democracy in Sierra Leone.

The ceremony began with a declaration by Dr. Emmanuel Gaima, Secretary to the President. He referenced Section 135 (1) of the Constitution of Sierra Leone, 1991, which outlines that the President appoints the Chief Justice based on advice from the Judicial and Legal Service Commission and parliamentary approval.

Chief Justice Kamanda expressed gratitude to President Bio for his appointment and emphasized his commitment to serving with dedication and integrity while respecting the rule of law. “I acknowledge the weight of this office and assure you that I will uphold the principles of justice, fairness, and equality that form the bedrock of our legal system,” he stated.

Chief Justice Kamanda also noted ongoing challenges in achieving justice and equality in Sierra Leone. He pledged collaboration with justices and stakeholders to improve access to justice and ensure transparency in legal processes. “I assure the citizens of Sierra Leone that their rights and liberties will be my foremost priority,” he added.

President Bio congratulated Chief Justice Kamanda on his new role, emphasizing the judiciary’s vital function in protecting democracy. “You have described this role as a weighty challenge, and rightly so,” said President Bio.

He assured support from his government for maintaining judicial independence and providing resources necessary for justice administration. “The independence of the judiciary is paramount,” concluded President Bio.

The ceremony underscored Sierra Leone’s efforts to uphold justice and reinforce democracy through an independent judiciary committed to safeguarding citizens’ rights.
