In September 2024, 28 personnel from SHG and associated projects or contracts began an online Remote Pilot theory course through The UAV Academy. The subsequent phase of this course involves practical training on the island, designed to build upon their theoretical knowledge. This training focuses on skills such as search and rescue, surveillance, surveying, mapping, inspection, monitoring, aerial photography, and videography.

The public is informed that drone flight training will occur from Monday, November 11 to Friday, November 22, 2024. Training locations will vary based on weather conditions. During this period, the public is advised to be cautious when flights are underway.

Participants in this program come from various sectors including St Helena Fire and Rescue Services, Royal St Helena Police Service, Sea Rescue, Terrestrial Conservation, Technical Services, GIS (Geographic Information Systems), Marine Compliance and Enforcement, Tourism and Marketing departments of the St Helena Research Institute and Airport Authority as well as Trust Marine and the Cloud Forest Project.

SHG’s initiative aims to enhance efficiency, safety, and decision-making capabilities by equipping staff with drone piloting skills in these essential areas.
