Senior Clerk concludes informative visit to St Helena

Representing the Speaker of the House of Commons, Rt Hon Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Senior Clerk Liam Laurence Smyth concluded his week-long visit to St Helena. The visit aimed to share Mr. Smyth’s expertise in the UK’s parliamentary system and enhance bilateral relations.

During his time on the island, Mr. Smyth engaged in discussions with Elected Members, Ministers, Legislative Council, and senior officials from the Public Service. The talks covered various topics such as parliamentary procedure, governance, and legislative drafting practices.

Mr. Smyth also visited Prince Andrew School to speak with students about the workings of the UK Parliament, offering them a unique insight into democratic processes.

A reception was held at Plantation House in honor of Mr. Smyth’s visit. Attendees included members of the Legislative Council, government officials, and Youth Parliament representatives. This event allowed for interaction with different stakeholders and sharing of experiences.

Additionally, Mr. Smyth participated in a World Mental Health Day “Tea and Talk” event on October 10, 2024, alongside members of the Legislative Council Office. The event emphasized mental health awareness and encouraged open discussion.

His expertise and insights have been invaluable in strengthening St Helena’s democratic institutions.”
