On Sunday, November 17, 2024, over seven million Senegalese citizens participated in legislative elections to choose 165 deputies for the National Assembly. The election employed a dual voting system combining first past-the-post and proportional representation methods.
Out of the total seats, 112 were contested under the first past-the-post system, including 15 seats allocated for the diaspora. The remaining 53 seats were filled through proportional representation.
The Heads of the ECOWAS-African Union Joint Election Observation Mission (EOM), Ambassador Francis Alex TSEGAH and Ambassador Calixte Aristide MBARI, monitored the electoral process in Dakar. They visited several polling centers across different districts such as Plateau, Médina, Yoff, and Colobane to observe the commencement of voting.
Ambassador TSEGAH was accompanied by Mr. Roland Kouassi AMOUSSOUGA-GERO, Deputy Head of Mission; H.E. Amb. Léné DIMBAN from Togo; Mr. Serigne Mamadou Ka from the ECOWAS Commission; and other technical team members. They also inspected the ECOWAS Situation Room and WANEP Senegal’s Electoral Monitoring Unit.
Following their observations at midday, Ambassador TSEGAH expressed satisfaction with how voting operations were conducted and noted that no major incidents had occurred. He praised the “calm and peaceful atmosphere” during both Election Day and the preceding campaign period.
Ambassador TSEGAH urged all parties to respect officially proclaimed results and encouraged them to use legal channels for any disputes. A press conference is scheduled for November 19, 2024, in Dakar where a preliminary statement on the elections will be released by the heads of the Joint ECOWAS-AU Electoral Mission.
