Waste Management Services, in collaboration with the St Helena National Trust (SHNT) and the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), has announced the winners of a competition aimed at designing a recycling superhero for St Helena. This initiative is part of the South Atlantic Plastic’s Project.

The competition targeted primary-aged school children on the island, encouraging them to submit creative entries. The judging panel selected three winners:

First place went to Hari Stead from Pilling Primary. Second place was awarded to Autumn Benjamin from St Paul’s Primary, and third place went to Emma Jacobs from Harford Primary. “We extend congratulations to Hari Stead, Autumn Benjamin, and Emma Jacobs for their imaginative designs,” said Waste Management Services.

The announcement coincides with Global Recycling Day on March 18, emphasizing recycling’s importance in preserving resources and promoting sustainability. By engaging young people as recycling advocates, the event aims to foster an environmentally conscious future for St Helena.

The winning designs will be integral to promoting recycling awareness on the island. A final superhero design incorporating elements from all three winning entries will be featured in upcoming campaigns.

“We would like to thank all the learners who participated in the competition, their schools, and our partners, SHNT and ZSL, for making this initiative a success,” stated Waste Management Services.

The first-place winner Hari Stead designed a ‘Wirebird Warrior.’ Autumn Benjamin created ‘Ms Ebony,’ while Emma Jacobs’ entry was titled “I Recycle, What’s your Super Power?” The final design by Waste Management Services combines aspects of all three submissions.
