President Boakai offers condolences after death of civil rights leader Jesse Jackson

President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr. of Liberia has sent condolences to the United States following the death of Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson, a well-known American civil rights leader, politician, and Baptist minister. Reverend Jackson died on February 17, 2026, at age 84 in Chicago.

In his message to U.S. President Donald J. Trump, President Boakai expressed his sadness over Reverend Jackson’s passing. He described Jackson as “a towering figure in the struggle for civil rights, social justice, and human dignity.” Boakai also noted that Jackson’s work for equality and democratic values had an impact beyond the United States and inspired people around the world, including in Liberia.

“During this difficult period of grief,” President Boakai said, “I extend to you and, through you, to the Government and people of the United States of America, especially the bereaved family, our heartfelt condolences for the loss sustained. We pray that the Almighty God grants consolation as your country endures this difficult period of mourning.”

President Boakai highlighted Liberia’s longstanding ties with the United States and stated that Liberia stands in solidarity with Americans during their time of mourning.

He ended his message by assuring President Trump and the American people of his highest consideration and esteem.
