President Joseph Boakai of Liberia held a bilateral meeting with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres during the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York. The meeting highlighted Liberia’s commitment to national development, global peace, democracy, and multilateralism.
President Boakai expressed gratitude for the warm reception from Secretary-General Guterres and acknowledged the UN’s ongoing support for Liberia. He praised Guterres’ efforts in fostering international cooperation.
During their discussion, President Boakai outlined Liberia’s progress in strengthening democracy, reinforcing the rule of law, and maintaining peace since its civil conflict ended. He emphasized Liberia’s aspiration to secure a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and sought broader international support for this bid.
“Liberia is committed to playing an active role within the United Nations system and to restore its standing in the global community,” President Boakai stated. “As a founding member of the UN and a nation that has emerged from war, we are uniquely positioned to contribute meaningfully to global peace and security.”
The President also reaffirmed Liberia’s dedication to democratic principles and its intent to support the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in preserving regional peace, security, and democracy.
Additionally, President Boakai addressed issues concerning Liberians returning after fleeing during the civil war. He pledged his government’s commitment to their reintegration and requested support from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
He also discussed challenges such as drug crises, high unemployment rates among youth, and efforts towards economic recovery.
Secretary-General Guterres acknowledged Liberia’s transition from conflict to peace and praised its democratic progress in West Africa. He commended Liberia for building an inclusive society and expressed well wishes for sustainable economic growth. The Secretary-General reaffirmed UN support for Liberia’s developmental agenda.
The meeting concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to collaboration on global peace, security, and development.
Other members attending included Honorable Sara Beysolow Nyanti (Minister of Foreign Affairs), Honorable Samuel Kofi Woods (Security Adviser), Madam Sarah Safyn Fyneah (Permanent Representative of Liberia to the UN), and Honorable Nathaniel Kwabo (Director General of the Cabinet).
