His Excellency, President Dr. Julius Maada Bio and First Lady Dr. Fatima Maada Bio met with the newly elected executive members of the Sierra Leone National Bike Riders’ Union at State House on December 10, 2024. This meeting emphasized the government’s dedication to enhancing the transport sector and creating job opportunities for youth. It was the first formal engagement between the union’s executive and President Bio since their national elections on May 5, 2024, which peacefully appointed Mr. Ishmael Sandy as President.

First Lady Dr. Fatima Maada Bio commended the union for its commitment to national development and highlighted its potential in generating employment and stimulating economic activities for young people nationwide. She praised their efforts in maintaining unity within the transport sector while introducing them to President Bio.

President Bio congratulated the new executive members, recognizing their crucial role in Sierra Leone’s growth. He noted that bike riders are essential in transporting people and goods, describing them as vital to the economy.

“When the economy is moving, you are the sector driving it,” he stated. “When goods arrive through the seaport, you ensure they reach their destinations. The transport sector is vital, and I commend you for abiding by the laws of the land and maintaining peace even during challenging times,” remarked President Bio.

Reflecting on transportation history, President Bio reiterated his administration’s pledge to revitalize this sector while supporting initiatives that enhance public safety and economic development. He also lauded the union’s resilience during disruptions in November 2023 and their peaceful demeanor following August’s insurrection.

Mr. Ishmael Sandy expressed gratitude towards First Lady Fatima Bio for her unwavering support in facilitating this meeting with government officials. He assured full cooperation from his union towards improving transportation services across Sierra Leone.

The meeting highlighted governmental recognition of bike riders as significant contributors toward achieving national objectives by fostering collaboration among all sectors involved in advancing countrywide progress.
