The Gambia marked its 60th Independence Day with a significant address by President Adama Barrow. The event, themed “Marching in Solidarity for Self-Reliance and National Development,” was attended by dignitaries including the President of Guinea Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, and the President of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
President Barrow expressed gratitude to attendees and emphasized the importance of solidarity in national development. He stated, “The theme is a call for us to amplify efforts geared towards the strong, united, and prosperous country we envision.”
Reflecting on The Gambia’s political journey since independence, he highlighted the peaceful transition during the 2016 Presidential Election as evidence of unity’s power. Since taking office in 2017, his government has prioritized reconciliation, democracy strengthening, and economic growth.
The president noted progress under the National Development Plan (YIRIWAA), citing a 5.8% economic growth rate in 2024 and reduced inflation from 18% in 2023 to 10% in 2024. Looking forward, he projected continued improvement from 2025 onward.
Addressing infrastructure developments, Barrow detailed over nine hundred kilometers of paved roads and plans for further expansion. In education, four hundred twenty-four new schools have been constructed alongside six thousand four hundred classrooms.
Health sector improvements include Universal Health Coverage efforts through a National Health Insurance Scheme and training initiatives at The Gambia Medical School (UTG). “These high points mark a new era in healthcare services,” he said.
Acknowledging challenges like unemployment and poverty contributing to irregular migration and crime, Barrow pledged continued expansion of livelihood opportunities. Efforts include supporting women entrepreneurs through the Women’s Enterprise Fund since 2019.
In agriculture—a critical sector—government interventions have boosted production except for groundnuts. Initiatives like Land for Agricultural Investment aim to engage youth in sustainable farming practices.
Barrow urged young Gambians to harness their potential at home rather than seeking opportunities abroad: “Let me assure you that my government stands in solidarity with you.”
Efforts toward universal electricity access are underway with two hundred three thousand meters connected so far. As bilateral cooperation strengthens, Barrow emphasized no Gambian should feel left behind on this transformative journey.
Concluding his address with appreciation for contributions from Gambians worldwide and development partners alike, he encouraged collective progress toward peace and prosperity: “Our unity… must propel us forward.”
