On Tuesday morning, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) paid a courtesy visit to President Adama Barrow at the State House in Banjul.

During its annual reporting meeting with the Head of State, President Barrow emphasized that despite challenges, “Respecting Human Rights is important for our democracy, thus Government is an important partner to your institution [NHRC].” He assured Chairperson Emmanuel Joof of his government’s commitment to promoting and protecting human rights, distancing from past state institutionalized violence against citizens.

The discussion covered pertinent human rights issues such as sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), illicit drug use, and the rise of hate speech on social media. Commissioner Joof praised the Barrow administration for significant strides in human rights promotion and protection. He encouraged continued efforts to strengthen economic, social, and cultural rights.

President Barrow informed the NHRC that his government remains tolerant and focused on addressing citizens’ right to development and economic challenges. He highlighted the media’s role in positively portraying the country and cited government achievements in governance and press freedom. The President called for intensified civic education programs by the National Council for Civic Education to raise awareness about citizens’ rights and responsibilities.

Having been in existence for five years, NHRC focuses on promoting and protecting human rights in The Gambia. President Barrow thanked the Commission for its achievements and urged it to remain impartial in executing its duties.
