Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Honourable Minister of Defence, and other cabinet ministers were present at a recent ceremony marking the graduation of The Gambia Armed Forces Intake Thirty-nine. President Adama Barrow delivered the keynote address at this event.
The President congratulated the new graduates for completing 22 weeks of basic military training. He stated, “You have demonstrated the resilience, discipline, and mental fortitude required to transition from civilian life into the professional ranks of the GFA.”
Barrow emphasized that joining the military is not only a career choice but also a commitment to national duty. He said, “It denotes your willingness to defend our homeland, uphold our values, and stand ready to answer the call of service.”
He acknowledged that modern security threats necessitate a professional and alert military force. Barrow expressed his government’s commitment to transforming The Gambia Armed Forces into a modern institution through investments in infrastructure and personnel welfare.
The President thanked international partners such as Senegal, Nigeria, Ghana, Mauritania, Guinea Bissau, the United Kingdom, and the United States for their support in defense efforts. He also recognized contributions from Türkiye, Pakistan, China, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and India.
Barrow urged The Gambia Armed Forces to maintain strong civil-military relations by being accountable to civilian authority while protecting citizens’ rights. He encouraged new members to serve as ambassadors of peace and unity.
In conclusion, Barrow advised graduates to serve with humility and integrity. He wished them well in their future roles within The Gambia Armed Forces.
