The 9th Nigerian Company (NIGCOY 9) of the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia has been recognized for its service with the ECOWAS Peace Medal. This accolade was awarded at a ceremony on May 9, 2025, following their deployment on June 26, 2024.
The medal honors NIGCOY 9’s contribution to peace, stability, and security in The Gambia’s west coast region. Present at the event were Her Excellency Mrs. Miatta Lilly French, ECOWAS Special Representative and Head of Mission in The Gambia, Gambian Minister of Defence Honourable Sering Modou, and various high-ranking civilian and military officials.
Speakers at the ceremony praised NIGCOY’s commitment to maintaining peace and order. The Special Representative lauded the company commander for organizing the parade effectively and highlighted the unit’s humanitarian efforts and support for Gambians.
Lieutenant-General MO Cham, representative of the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, along with commanders from defense and security forces and local community representatives, attended to emphasize the strong ties between Gambian Armed Forces and the Nigerian-Iranian contingent.
Mission Headquarters also issued an official citation to NIGCOY in acknowledgment of its vital role in sustaining peace in West Africa.
