Nigeria’s ongoing economic reforms have received support from international stakeholders during meetings in Abuja this week. The Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, met with Anna Bjerde, Managing Director of Operations at the World Bank Group, and other senior officials to discuss progress and next steps for Nigeria’s economy.

The talks highlighted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic policies and emphasized the momentum in sectors such as energy, agriculture, digital infrastructure, and trade. Participants focused on improving electricity reliability, supporting agricultural development, enhancing digital systems, facilitating trade flows, and increasing private sector investment to boost productivity and competitiveness.

Nigeria reiterated its leadership role in energy reform and its ambition to become a regional economic hub. Abuja’s position as host city for the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) was noted as an advantage in advancing these goals.

Anna Bjerde acknowledged Nigeria’s progress on reforms and praised the government’s focus. She said there is “increasing confidence from international markets and partners.” She also stated: “She reaffirmed support for Nigeria’s investment led growth agenda, with emphasis on infrastructure delivery and private sector participation.”

Both parties agreed to accelerate implementation efforts aimed at attracting large-scale capital investments and generating opportunities for Nigeria’s expanding population.

This meeting reflects Nigeria’s commitment to sustainable economic growth and its aspiration to strengthen its presence in both regional and global markets.
