The Health and Social Care Portfolio (HSC) has announced the introduction of a new optometry service on St Helena, marking a significant development in local eye care. Previously, residents depended on annual visits from optometrists, with spectacles taking up to four months to arrive. This initiative is guided by optometrist Stephanie van Dyk and supported by South Africa’s Spectacle Warehouse.
The initial visit for setting up the service infrastructure is scheduled from November 30 to December 9, 2024. During this period, 100 consultation slots have been allocated, with future visits planned to accommodate up to 200 patients. Three to four visits per year are anticipated, offering more frequent access to professional optometry services. The next visit is expected in March 2025.
Key features of the service include digital eye testing equipment such as an auto-refractor and phoropter for measuring refractive errors, along with digital screens for vision testing and tools for measuring eye pressures. The use of a digital ordering platform allows for faster spectacle manufacturing and delivery within two to four weeks. Payment methods and setup details will be addressed during the initial visit.
An expanded selection of spectacle frames and sunglasses is available, with plans to further refine options based on patient preferences. This new service aims to deliver high-quality eye care tailored to St Helena’s community needs. The partnership with Spectacle Warehouse provides access to expertise and technology that supports long-term eye health on the island.
The HSC and Spectacle Warehouse emphasize their commitment “to delivering excellent optometry services,” ensuring “a brighter, clearer future for all St Helena residents.” Appointment costs remain unchanged at £7.70 per session.
