Liberia has been named as one of 87 countries qualified by the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) as candidate countries for fiscal year 2026. The announcement was made through the Candidate Country Report, which was presented to the US Congress in line with section 608(a) of the Millennium Challenge Act of 2003.
The Act allows the MCC to provide assistance to nations that enter into a Millennium Challenge Compact with the United States. This assistance aims to support policies and programs that promote lasting economic growth.
Countries are selected as “candidate countries” based on their per capita income levels and their eligibility under U.S. law. Some nations are excluded due to specific legal prohibitions on receiving assistance, as outlined in section 608(a) of the Act.
Liberia joins other countries such as Afghanistan, Algeria, Togo, South Africa, Angola, Benin, and Sierra Leone among those qualified this year. Meanwhile, countries like Burkina Faso, Burma, Ghana, Eritrea, Mali, and Guinea were found ineligible for US economic assistance.
