Mauritania and China recently agreed to enhance their fishery activities, while also combating illegal, unreported and uncontrolled fishing activities, and upgrading outdated fishing vessels off the coast of western North Africa.
The agreement came during a meeting of China-Mauritania Mixed Committee on Fisheries in Beijing earlier this month.
China’s Vice Minister Yu Kangzhen and Nani Ould Chrougha, minister of Fisheries and Maritime Economy of Mauritania, both spoke highly of the two countries’ long-term friendly cooperation, especially in fisheries.
Of all African nations, Mauritania has been the longest to conduct fisheries cooperation with China and hosts the most Chinese fishing boats.
There currently are three Chinese high-sea fishing companies engaged in fishing and aquatic product processing in Mauritania. They include China National Fisheries Corporation, Shanghai Fisheries General Corp. and Fuzhou Hongdong Pelagic Fishery Corporation.
