President Joseph Nyuma Boakai of Liberia has reinstated Madam Davidetta Browne Lansanah as Chairperson of the National Elections Commission (NEC), effective immediately. This decision was made after a meeting held on February 18, 2025, at the Executive Mansion in Monrovia. The meeting included NEC Board of Commissioners, the ECOWAS Ambassador to Liberia, and senior officials from the Ministry of State for Presidential Affairs.

The reinstatement follows extensive discussions among NEC Commissioners and presidential advisors, which resulted in an agreement to enhance cooperation among the Commissioners and reverse previous dismissals of certain NEC employees.

In his announcement, President Boakai stressed the need for unity and professionalism within the NEC. He urged Commissioners to collaborate closely and avoid any perception of internal discord within this vital institution. He also called for efforts to restore harmony between the Commission’s leadership and staff.

President Boakai plans to meet with NEC’s aggrieved workers’ leadership at a future date to address concerns raised in a petition following a demonstration in December 2024. He encouraged NEC employees to support the Commission’s work while maintaining peace and cooperation.

With this resolution, President Boakai expressed hope that uncertainty surrounding the NEC has been resolved, paving the way for a smooth Nimba County by-election following Senator Prince Y. Johnson’s passing.

The President reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining the integrity of the NEC and ensuring credible democratic processes in Liberia.
