President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., of Liberia has expanded the scope of the ECOMOG Memorial Committee to include recognition of the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL). This decision acknowledges UNMIL’s significant role in restoring peace and stability in Liberia.

The committee, initially formed on January 29, 2025, under Major General (Rtd) Daniel Ziankahn, was originally tasked with honoring the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) for its contributions to Liberia’s peace process. The expanded mandate now includes efforts to rehabilitate the Peace Monument on Du-port Road and identify mass grave locations across the country.

Following ECOMOG’s intervention in 1990, UNMIL began its largest peacekeeping mission in Liberia in 2003. During its mandate, UNMIL was instrumental in stabilizing the nation by overseeing disarmament, facilitating democratic elections in 2005, and establishing a foundation for governance reforms. The United Nations also created a peacebuilding framework that continues to aid Liberia’s development both domestically and internationally.

Liberia now celebrates over 22 years of uninterrupted peace. In recognition of the sacrifices made by both ECOMOG and UNMIL, President Boakai emphasized that “the Government of Liberia is committed to ensuring they receive the highest honor and appreciation from a grateful nation.”
