President Joseph Nyuma Boakai of Liberia has extended congratulations to Pope Leo XIV on his election as the 267th Bishop of Rome and Supreme Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church. The President acknowledged the significance of this event, noting that Pope Leo XIV is the first American-born Pontiff in the Church’s two-thousand-year history.
Pope Leo XIV, originally Robert Francis Prevost from Chicago, brings extensive pastoral experience to his new role. He has served as a missionary and bishop in Peru and most recently held the position of Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops.
President Boakai praised the new Pope’s dedication to peace, unity, and social justice, as highlighted in his inaugural message: “Peace be with all of you!” The President expressed optimism that Pope Leo XIV’s leadership will inspire dialogue, compassion, and service to humanity—values important to Liberians.
Additionally, President Boakai reaffirmed Liberia’s commitment to maintaining strong relations with the Holy See and supporting the Catholic Church’s efforts in promoting human dignity and global solidarity.
