The Minister of Finance and Development Planning of Liberia, Hon. Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan, engaged in a series of meetings with international and US government officials during President Joseph Boakai’s visit to Washington DC. On July 10, 2025, Minister Ngafuan met with Mr. Bo Li, Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), at the IMF headquarters.
During their meeting, Mr. Li expressed the IMF’s satisfaction with Liberia’s progress under the Extended Credit Facility program. He praised President Boakai for his leadership and commitment to development in Liberia. Mr. Li informed Minister Ngafuan that the IMF is finalizing reports on its recent reviews and consultations with Liberia, which could lead to enrollment in the Resilience Sustainability Facility (RSF). This facility aims to provide resources for climate resilience and adaptation efforts.
Mr. Li also mentioned plans for a climate policy diagnostic mission to assess public investment management in Liberia later this month. The assessment will identify interventions needed for climate risk resilience and inform resource allocation under the RSF.
Minister Ngafuan conveyed President Boakai’s appreciation for the IMF’s support during challenging times and highlighted Liberia’s election to a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for 2026-2027 as a boost to economic diplomacy.
On July 9, Minister Ngafuan visited the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) headquarters accompanied by Deputy Finance Minister Dehpue Zuo. They discussed Liberia’s second Compact program with MCC officials including Ms. Alicia Robinson-Morgan. The discussions centered on ongoing support for infrastructure projects like the Mt. Coffee Hydro-electric dam rehabilitation.
Dr. Sohan Dasgupta from MCC acknowledged strong US-Liberia relations and reaffirmed continued partnership despite current reviews by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Earlier on July 8, discussions were held with Mateo Goldman at the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) about increasing investments in energy, agriculture, and financial services sectors in Liberia.
On July 10, Minister Ngafuan met Dave Donaldson at White House Faith Office regarding support for education and health sectors affected by USAID project cancellations.
These meetings reflect ongoing efforts to strengthen partnerships between Liberia and international stakeholders towards achieving development goals outlined in President Boakai’s ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development.
