President Joseph Nyuma Boakai of Liberia has reiterated his country’s dedication to the African Union’s Common Position on reforming the United Nations Security Council. Represented by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Madam Sara Beysolow Nyanti, President Boakai emphasized the necessity for Africa to have fair representation in global governance during the 38th Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government.
At this session, which included a report from Dr. Julius Maada Bio, President of Sierra Leone, on efforts to secure Africa’s place in the Security Council, Minister Beysolow Nyanti highlighted that many issues addressed by the council pertain to Africa. However, Africa still lacks a permanent voice in this critical body.
Minister Beysolow Nyanti expressed support for two permanent and two non-permanent African seats on the UN Security Council. She stressed that this is not merely a privilege but an overdue right. Liberia also aims to pursue a non-permanent seat for Africa as part of its commitment to enhancing Africa’s role in international decision-making.
She recalled Liberia’s founding membership in the United Nations and its ongoing efforts toward creating a more equitable international order. “The time for reform is now,” she stated, asserting that Africa possesses the necessary influence and moral authority to demand a Security Council reflective of current global realities.
Liberia continues to back the AU’s unified push for transforming the UN Security Council so that Africa becomes an equal participant in discussions about global peace and security.
