President Joseph Nyuma Boakai of Liberia paid tribute to U.S. Senator Jack F. Reed in Providence, Rhode Island, on October 2, 2024. The event recognized Senator Reed’s long-standing support for Liberians and his role in the passage of the Liberian Refugee Immigration Fairness Act of 2019 (H.R. 1169). This legislation has allowed many Liberians in the United States to gain permanent residency.

President Boakai praised Senator Reed’s efforts as a demonstration of humanity and solidarity with Liberia during difficult times. “Senator Reed, your handprints are all over the struggle of the Liberian refugees here for survival, dignity, and advancement,” President Boakai stated. He added that Senator Reed had been a champion for Liberians.

The ceremony was attended by Representative Grace Diaz of Rhode Island, whom President Boakai referred to as “a native Liberian” due to her heritage. He acknowledged her work in promoting Liberian culture and supporting its people.

Both Senator Reed and Representative Diaz received invitations from President Boakai to visit Liberia, highlighting the strong ties between Liberia and Rhode Island. President Boakai also spoke about Liberia’s relationship with the United States and called for continued support as Liberia undertakes national reforms under his ARREST Agenda.

He emphasized the importance of the Liberian Diaspora in shaping the nation’s future and urged them to contribute towards reconciliation and development efforts. “We have risen from the ashes of conflict, and together, we are shaping a brighter and more harmonious future for Liberia,” he said.

Senator Reed expressed gratitude for being honored and reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for Liberian issues at Capitol Hill. The event concluded with Senator Reed receiving traditional Liberian attire and both him and Representative Diaz being awarded plaques.
