President Joseph Nyuma Boakai of Liberia addressed the Mission 300 Africa Energy Summit in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, reaffirming Liberia’s commitment to universal energy access. He emphasized the importance of reliable energy for economic growth, education, and healthcare.

President Boakai highlighted that only 33% of Liberia’s population currently has electricity access. He announced plans to electrify 100,000 households annually with a target of 75% access by 2030. The strategy includes grid expansion and renewable energy solutions to address urban-rural disparities.

Key initiatives include developing the 150 MW Saint Paul 2 Hydropower Project and promoting utility-scale solar PV projects through private investment. A high-level steering committee led by the Vice President will mobilize financing for competitive bidding on upcoming solar projects.

“Access to reliable energy is the foundation upon which we can build thriving economies,” said President Boakai. He noted improvements in electricity access from 3% in 2012 to 33% today and reduced commercial losses below 30%.

The President thanked the African Development Bank Group and World Bank Group for their support in fostering partnerships for energy initiatives. “Together, we can empower every person in Africa with the energy they deserve,” he concluded.

The summit provides a platform for African leaders to collaborate on achieving universal energy access by 2030, essential for development and sustainability across the continent.
