President Joseph Nyuma Boakai of Liberia met with Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, the Crown Prince of Kuwait, in New York on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly. The meeting focused on strengthening relations between Liberia and Kuwait.
The Crown Prince, representing the Emir of Kuwait, congratulated Liberia on its recent election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. He also conveyed Kuwait’s willingness to increase cooperation with Liberia. Referring to Kuwait’s previous experience as a Security Council member from 2018 to 2019, he pledged support and offered to share relevant lessons with Liberia during its tenure.
Kuwait expressed an interest in furthering collaboration with African countries, particularly in health, education, and agricultural development sectors.
President Boakai thanked Kuwait for its hospitality and its ongoing support for Liberia in multilateral forums and bilateral development projects. He specifically recognized Kuwait’s assistance in securing development financing, highlighting a loan arrangement for constructing 115 kilometers of roads between Bong and Lofa Counties.
Liberia welcomed several proposed bilateral agreements submitted by Kuwait and indicated readiness to establish a Joint Commission to advance these initiatives. The Liberian delegation also stated it would consult closely with Kuwait on issues before the Security Council that are of mutual concern.
Senior officials from both governments attended the discussions. The Kuwaiti delegation included Abdullah Ali Al-Yahya (Minister of Foreign Affairs), Sheikh Dr. Meshal Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah (Director General of KDIPA), Mazen Issa Al-Issa (Undersecretary of the Amiri Diwan for Foreign Affairs), Ambassador Bader Al-Tunaib (Assistant to the Office of the Foreign Minister), and Tareq Mohammad Al-Bannai (Permanent Representative to the United Nations).
Representing Liberia were Sara Beysolow Nyanti (Minister of Foreign Affairs), Augustine K. Ngafuan (Minister of Finance and Development Planning), Samuel Kofi Woods (National Security Advisor), Lewis Brown (Permanent Representative to the United Nations), Ibrahim Al-Bakri Nyei (Deputy Minister for International Cooperation), and Christiana W. Konneh (Assistant Minister at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs).
President Boakai stated: “Liberia is interested in working hand in hand with Kuwait to foster stronger bilateral ties, enhance development cooperation, and advance shared priorities within the international community.”
