His Excellency Dr. Julius Maada Bio, President of Sierra Leone and Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, has arrived in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea. He is attending the 7th Mid-Year Coordination Meeting of the African Union on July 13, 2025.
The summit brings together Heads of State and Government from African Union Member States, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), Regional Mechanisms (RMs), and the African Union Commission (AUC). The agenda includes discussions on regional integration, peace and security, governance, and sustainable development.
President Bio will deliver a statement on behalf of ECOWAS during a session focused on regional integration. Other leaders from organizations such as the East African Community (EAC), Southern African Development Community (SADC), Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), and Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) will also participate. His remarks are expected to cover economic recovery, regional stability, and coordination between the AU and RECs.
Key topics at the meeting include continental integration status, implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Africa’s geopolitical response, and progress under the AU’s 2025 Theme of the Year. Discussions will also address conflict prevention, institutional reform, and policy harmonization between AU and RECs.
The meeting is hosted by President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea and chaired by President João Lourenço of Angola, current Chairperson of the African Union.
