Marcella Mittens, a recent graduate from Canterbury Christ Church University, has been awarded First-Class Honours in her BSc Business Management and Tourism Studies degree. She was recognized as the student with the highest overall mark in her class. Her academic excellence was further highlighted by her performance in the Tourism, Events and Hospitality Course.

Her combined honours degree offered an understanding of business and tourism, focusing on island tourism. The program’s impact by the COVID-19 pandemic allowed Marcella to study industry recovery strategies, particularly concerning St Helena.

A significant part of her studies included a trip to Malta, where she learned about island heritage and sustainable tourism practices. Her business modules aligned with the Chartered Institute of Management, covering management and economics topics. During her studies, she represented Canterbury Christ Church University at SHR Heidelberg University in Germany, gaining global business insights.

Marcella’s dissertation titled “Navigating Change: Local Insights on St Helena Tourism Development, Economic Transformations, and Governance Dynamics, with a Focus on the New Airport Development” examined the effects of St Helena’s new airport on tourism and economy through interviews with locals.

Reflecting on her experience, Marcella said: “Overall, I have thoroughly enjoyed my university experience. The diverse range of subjects I studied…broadened my understanding of global issues…within the context of island tourism and economic development.”

She added: “The experience of living and studying in a different country helped me develop valuable life skills…These experiences not only enriched my academic journey but also prepared me for the complexities of a globalised world.”

Marie Horton, Portfolio Director for Education, Skills and Employment commented: “Congratulations to Marcella Mittens on achieving First-Class Honours…Her dedication and perseverance…are truly commendable.”
