On Monday, June 30, 2025, at 23:59, Governor Nigel Phillips dissolved the Legislative Council in accordance with section 76(b) of the Constitution. This move sets the stage for a General Election, which is scheduled to occur on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, if a poll is necessary. This upcoming election will be the second under the ministerial system of government since its inception in October 2021.

In the interim period leading up to the election of a new Legislative Council, public services across various portfolios will continue their operations as usual. The Executive Council retains the ability to convene if required; however, it will refrain from making any major new policy decisions or approving legislation and significant spending commitments unless an emergency arises.

Should an emergency occur, provisions within the Constitution allow for the Governor to recall the Legislative Council after consulting with the Chief Minister. These measures are intended to maintain governmental continuity during this transitional phase.
