Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has announced that the government has cleared all arrears owed to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT). This announcement was made during the inauguration ceremony of SSNIT’s new Board of Trustees in Accra.
Dr. Forson emphasized the government’s commitment to maintaining a sustainable pension system, confirming that all outstanding obligations have been addressed. “I want to assure you that the government is current on all payments due to SSNIT,” he stated. “We are determined to continue honoring these obligations to safeguard the pensions of Ghanaian workers.”
SSNIT Director-General Mr. Kwesi Afreh Biney confirmed that not only have inherited arrears been cleared, but current obligations have also been met by the government.
This assurance from the Finance Minister comes at a time when there is heightened public scrutiny regarding pension fund management and increased calls for transparency in SSNIT’s investment decisions. The remarks aim to bolster public confidence in both the Fund’s financial status and the government’s dedication to protecting retirement benefits for workers.
The newly formed SSNIT Board, chaired by Nana Ansah Sasraku III, includes representatives from government, organized labor, and employer groups. Their role is to provide strategic oversight and ensure sound governance of the Fund.
