Global leaders pledge support for Sierra Leone’s energy transition

State House, Freetown, Tuesday 5 November 2024 – The Regional Director of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and leaders from global energy agencies visited President Julius Maada Bio at State House. They expressed their support for Sierra Leone’s initiatives in energy, agriculture, and climate.

The delegation included representatives such as the Regional Director of IFAD’s West and Central Africa Division, the Vice President of the Global Energy Alliance for Peace and People (GEAPP), the Deputy CEO of Sustainable Energy for All, among others.

Hon. Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkela, Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, Renewable Energy, and Food Security, introduced the guests. He emphasized their role in Sierra Leone’s Energy Transition Plan and Green Growth.

Mr. Bernard Mwinyel Hien, Regional Director of IFAD’s West and Central Africa Division, spoke on behalf of the delegation. He appreciated President Bio’s commitment to renewable energy and climate action. He said: “When we see governments like yours committing to food security and energy, we are proud to partner with you, and all partners will support your vision to realize these goals.”

President Bio thanked them for commitments made at a Vienna conference and their willingness to provide actionable support for Sierra Leone. He reiterated his dedication to improving food systems through his Feed Salone program.

He acknowledged that sustainable energy is essential for achieving food security amid climate change challenges. President Bio stated: “I want to feed my country, reduce the cost of importation, and use our youthful population to engage in climate-smart farming.”

President Bio expressed gratitude for their commitment as supportive partners aiding Sierra Leone’s progress.
