The Ministry of Finance in Ghana plans to introduce a National Value Added Tax (VAT) Reward Scheme next year, aiming to encourage tax compliance among citizens. The announcement was made by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson following his meeting with staff at the Large Taxpayer Office at VAT House in Accra.
Under the new scheme, taxpayers who collect VAT receipts will have their entries included in national draws, offering them opportunities to win various rewards. The government expects this approach will motivate more people to request receipts during transactions, which could help reduce revenue losses and strengthen the country’s overall tax collection.
This initiative is part of broader reforms in tax administration that are set for implementation next year. Planned measures include introducing a redesigned VAT system and deploying fiscal electronic devices to improve compliance, transparency, and data accuracy.
Dr. Ato Forson stated that these combined efforts would “build a modern, fair, and efficient revenue system” that can support the government’s goal of “Resetting for Growth, Jobs, and Economic Transformation.”
