The African Union has received $61.1 million from Germany in support of the AU’s programs
and joint strategic initiatives.

The pledge concludes bilateral negotiations between the country and the commission.

A large part of this year’s commitment from Germany will be
put toward the development of agriculture through the improvement of
agricultural skills by supporting the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture
Development Program (CAADP). The CAADP will benefit from an additional
$32.2  million from Germany, with the additional donation supporting agricultural
technical vocational education and training.

The majority of the money
will be spread over 10 African countries with a special focus on women.

One of the new factors in the deal between the AU and
Germany is the Continental Free Trade Area (CFTA). Germany made a preliminary donation
of $5.6 million toward the support of the CFTA’s ongoing preparations
and negotiations.

The two governmental bodies also agreed to continued
cooperation when it comes to peace and security, good governance, the Pan
African University and geothermal energy.
