Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, met with Joao Gomes Cravinho, the European Union’s Special Representative for the Sahel, in Abuja, Nigeria. The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between the European Union and ECOWAS to support West Africa’s peace, regional integration, and economic development.
Joao Gomes Cravinho reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting ECOWAS in addressing common challenges and promoting peace, security, and stability in West Africa. “ECOWAS is a privileged partner and working with it is fundamental for me,” he stated.
The discussion covered security issues affecting West Africa, particularly terrorism and insecurity. Dr. Touray praised the friendship and cooperation between the EU and ECOWAS and expressed support for Mr. Cravinho’s mission.
Dr. Touray emphasized that any partnership with ECOWAS should prioritize unity, development, and security in West Africa. “Our unity is fundamental; it cannot be sacrificed,” he noted. He stressed that partners must help preserve peace and unity while promoting development in the region.
The meeting was also attended by Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah, ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, and Habibu Yaya Bappah, Executive Assistant to President Touray.
