The ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) recently held a workshop in Abidjan to validate the Market Study and Intervention Strategy aimed at promoting energy efficiency across ECOWAS member states. The event focused on strategies to enhance sustainable livelihoods through energy efficiency.

Participants revisited recommendations from a prior online workshop, setting the stage for comprehensive discussions. Representatives from ECOWAS member states provided their perspectives and valuable inputs on proposed strategies.

A presentation detailed the Intervention Strategy, highlighting actions and goals to scale up energy efficiency in the region. This strategy aims to support sustainable livelihoods, reduce energy consumption, and contribute to environmental and economic development. Member states engaged in discussions about refining the strategy to fit local contexts.

Mr. Francis Sempore, Executive Director of ECREEE, stressed the importance of collaboration among governments, private sectors, technical partners, financial partners, and international donors in advancing Africa’s energy transition. He emphasized improving access to affordable and sustainable cooling solutions.

Stakeholders from ECREEE, UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization), and AERE (African Energy Regulators Association) facilitated discussions aligned with regional energy goals. The International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR) provided insights showing that refrigeration accounts for about 20% of global electricity consumption and contributes around 10% of global CO2 emissions related to energy. This underscores the relevance of refrigeration in energy efficiency efforts.

The workshop concluded with the formal adoption and validation of the document outlining next steps for implementation. Final remarks ensured all contributions were documented for future action.
